plastic surgery statistics

Based on the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ASAPS) 17th annual report, cosmetic procedures increased 12% from 2012 to 2013.

In 2013 more than 11 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the US. This is 1 million more than were performed in 2012!

The total spent on these procedures was more than 12 billion dollars!

Top 5 procedures in 2013:

Liposuction — Moved to first place in 2013 by number of procedures, an increase of 16.3%

Breast Augmentation — Usually the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the US, breast augmentation moved to second place in 2013 with a decrease of 5.2%

Eyelid Surgery —  up 5.4% percent for a total of 161,389 procedures

Tummy Tucks —  up 2.3% percent for a total of 160,077

Nose Surgery —  up 2.9% for a total of 147,966 procedures

On the rise —  While buttock augmentation and labiaplasty did not make the top five, they did show more increased popularity than any other procedures on the list: buttock augmentation increased by 58% and labiaplasty increased by 44%.

Quote from the report: “The numbers do not come as a surprise,” states Jack Fisher, MD, President of ASAPS. “Technological advances, less-invasive procedures, greater accessibility are making aesthetic procedures, surgical and nonsurgical, far more attractive to the public at-large. Further, the rebounding economy is encouraging people to start investing in themselves once again.”

2014 was a banner year for plastic surgery and we expect 2015 to be a huge year for the field as well. What do you think about these plastic surgery statistics? I’d love to know!
